{"id":5756,"date":"2024-08-02T14:45:29","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T12:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.baltur.com\/intl\/?p=5756"},"modified":"2025-01-21T12:59:59","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T11:59:59","slug":"balturs-new-patented-combustion-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.baltur.com\/intl\/2024\/08\/balturs-new-patented-combustion-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltur&#8217;s new patented combustion technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Interview with Valentina Moccia, Mechanical Designer at Baltur<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I joined Baltur in the summer of 2017 as a Mechanical Designer<\/strong>, and in the summer of 2019 I was assigned my first project as team leader for the research, development and manufacture of a new series of burners &#8211; the future SLX &#8211; setting as a strategic goal the\u00a0<strong>development of a new combustion technology<\/strong>\u00a0that would guarantee\u00a0<strong>very low NOx emissions<\/strong>: &lt;50 mg\/Nm3, without the use of FGR (flue gas recirculation).<br \/>\nWe knew it was going to be a long and challenging project. The knowledge we had already acquired was not enough to achieve our goal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe early stages were purely experimental (and the most fun in my opinion).<br \/>\nWith the input from our more experienced colleagues, we developed various components of the combustion head and performed \u201ccold\u201d CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations &#8211; without simulating combustion processes &#8211; to try to determine the gas and air flow rates.<\/p>\n<p>The aims of this phase were to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>promote internal flue gas recirculation directly in the combustion chamber as much as possible<\/li>\n<li>increase the turbulence of the fuel and comburent streams<\/li>\n<li>divide the \u201ccombustion head\u201d into two lines: a stable and robust \u201cflame root\u201d and one to complete the combustion process<\/li>\n<li>decouple the gas supply to make the two lines independent of each other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once a satisfactory geometry was found, the first prototype and initial tests in the Burner Laboratory were carried out.<br \/>\nAgain, the synergy and contribution of all the technicians in the Laboratory were crucial for the development of this new technology.<br \/>\nWe performed one test after another and made hundreds of new parts. First designed, then constructed in the prototype workshop, and finally tested.<\/p>\n<p>After identifying an optimal solution, we focused on developing and defining the design of the head assembly in its details, with dedicated castings.<\/p>\n<p>We carried out \u201chot\u201d CFD simulations with the support of an external company &#8211; Enginsoft &#8211; to estimate temperatures, flame distribution and confirm the test data\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The combustion head research and development activity<\/strong>\u00a0described above, in 2020 resulted in:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the production of\u00a0<strong>3 prototype burners for 3 sizes of boilers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>the carrying out of two\u00a0<strong>field tests and several in the laboratory on commercial boilers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Also of great importance was the\u00a0<strong>patenting of this newly developed technology<\/strong>\u00a0at the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, what is known as the flow of operational activities for the design and development of a new product began, identified by various stages that the team leader must follow to obtain authorisation for sale and the launch of series production\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TBG SLX: Burners with the lowest emission class in Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis series is called\u00a0<strong>TBG SLX\u00a0<\/strong>and the first 3 models, derived from the 3 prototypes mentioned before, were\u00a0<strong>approved in the second half of 2021 with the lowest European emission class: class 4<\/strong>\u00a0according to EN 676 (NOx &lt;60 mg\/kWh).<br \/>\nTheir production started at the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>These major, innovative features have been explored in more detail in the article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltur.com\/ww\/en\/baltur_super_low_nox_burners\"><strong>Baltur Super Low NOX Burners<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\nI will briefly point them out:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>New combustion head design with\u00a0<strong>dual fuel distribution system and geometry that boosts flue gas recirculation<\/strong>\u00a0within the combustion chamber<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent management and regulation of gas flows<\/strong>\u00a0with two different supply systems<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The primary applications are industrial and heating boilers<\/strong>. They also perform very well in flame inversion boilers, where other burners struggle with emissions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you appreciate most about Baltur and your department in particular?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family environment, the solidarity and synergy between colleagues within the entire R&amp;D department, and the collaboration between the various departments.<\/p>\n<p>In R&amp;D we create the products that make and will make the company thrive, which is why I think the role of the designer and team leader is an important one, to be taken seriously and responsibly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the challenges you enjoy most about your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearching new technologies to make burners more efficient in terms
